Maya Angelou
Born in 1928 in St. Louis , Missouri , she started her working life as a cook, streetcar conductor, cocktail waitress, dancer and soon became an unwed mother.  She went on to become a poet, educator, historian, actress, playwright, civil rights activist, producer, director and one of the world’s most celebrated writers.   Her works include her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
