Images of Jim Crow Segregation

African Americans were not the only targets of racial terror. Some Jewish people were lynched. Native Americans were regarded as "colored" and made to stay in "their place." But sometimes they fought back. On January 18, 1958, 500 well-armed Lumbee Indians encircled a group of Klansmen in Maxton, North Carolina and chased them out of town. They then burned the Klan regalia. This painting celebrates the "Battle of Hayes Pond."
